9th March 2004

the introduction

The notice telling passengers what is happening at the station.

looking towards bristol

The view towards Bristol. The trackbed is going into place behind Platform 1.

the same view from the footbridge

The same view but this time taken from the footbridge.

looking north

The view north. The headshunt has been disconnected from the mainline and the siding removed completely. I'm not sure what's happening on the right just yet, but I think it's work related to the signalling and required cabling etc. However, the three poles that the digger is sitting between suggests something may be built on this spot.

looking north

A very similar view to the previous one except this one shows a hole in the ground which may be the foundations for something.

150249 standing at the station

150249 stands in the station with a working to Cardiff.

One Week Later!

foundations

A week later and the foundations have been poured at the spot where the digger was standing. In the background 158748 approaches the junction on its journey from Cardiff.

the dmu

It's not stopping and zooms through the station. The bloke on the right is carrying shuttering used in making the concrete foundations visible in the previous pics.

wiring

There's a lot of cabling going on including this run behind Platform 2.

158869

158869 passes through on a Cardiff service.

4th April 2004

looking north

The view north now shows work being done by diggers on the left.

foundations

There's lots of new foundations going in on this side too, presumably for an addition to the footbridge. (don't quote me on that though!)

new signals

The work that has been happening on the Bristol side of the station has now become clear. A new signal has gone into place along with associated switching equipment.

looking south

Looking south and the foundations for the new platform edge are in place as well as piles of brieze blocks ready for construction to start. (an assumption on my part I should stress!)

looking south

New lengths of CWR have been dropped off.

another view south

Another view south.

foundations

A closer look at the foundations that have gone in ready for building the new platform edge.

the trackbed

Looking towards Kipling Road Footbridge and the trackbed of the new alignment is still being worked on.

Saturday 10th April.

For even more pics of the work going on in this area please see the Kipling Road page.

ballast trains

A couple of Class 66 powered ballast trains wait in the rain during an engineering possession over Easter. For pics of what's going on in the background please visit the Kipling Road page.

66120

66120 waits its turn of duty in dreadful conditions.

the platform edge

The platform edge has started to take shape.

new foundations

The foundations for the footbridge extension are proceeding rapidly.

This next set of pics were taken on Monday 19th April.

new footbridge

The biggest changes since my last visit has been the arrival of the footbridge extension and work starting on a new footpath into the station. (the current footpath follows the alignment of the new railway)

new footbridge

Another view. The extension was put into place at 6am on Sunday 18th April.

another look

The footbridge will connect to a new footpath being built further to the north of the current one.

looking north

The view north from the footbridge. The alignment of the new footpath can be seen being built on the far left of this pic.

the footpath

The view from outside the station showing construction of the new footpath.

bristol end

Standing at the Bristol end of the station and looking towards the works going on at Kipling Road. Spoil is being excavated in readiness for track panels to be put in place.

the platform

Looking the other way and the construction of a new platform continues apace.

machinery

A Carillion owned Tamper passes through.

150253

As does 150253.

30th April 2004

footpath

Work continues on constructing a new footpath.

the trackbed

Before long this view will be impossible to get unless sitting in the cab of a train. The old footpath stands on the alignment of the new trackbed.

freight

66167 negotiates the junction and heads south through FAW.

the platform

The platform has been steadily backfilled....

viewed from above

... and the trackbed is starting to be dug out.

158868

158868 sets off with a service for Cardiff.

the footpath

Work on the footpath as viewed from the footbridge.

150251

150251 comes to a stop with a Portsmouth Harbour service.

hst

As it leaves a HST blasts through heading north.

158

158749 shortly arrives at platform 2.

Second Week of May 2004

150241

150241 stands at the station.

the footpath

The new footpath has had fenceposts added.

a voyager

A Voyager gives a blast of its horn and accelerates hard through the station.

24th May 2004

looking south

Tracklaying has started and has reached the new platform.

the trackbed

The footbridge extension and new footpath are now open and the old footpath is being dug up in readiness for tracklaying to commence.

t'other side

The trackbed work viewed from the new footpath.

sleepers

Piles of sleepers have been delivered in readiness for laying.

footpath

The far end of the footpath has already disappeared under a pile of machinery and supplies.

the new footpath

A look at the new footpath.

158746

158746 waits for passengers to board before continuing on its journey.

10th June 2004

new track

The trackwork is now complete through the station and is being ballasted and compacted. The back-filling of the platform is now almost complete and is being readied for its top surface.

another look

Another look along the new platform. At the far end you can see that the final platform edge is being put into place.

track panels

Some track panels have been dumped on the embankment behind the new trackwork.

new crossovers

Looking north from the footbridge and a new crossover has been assembled ready for positioning during the forthcoming engineering blockade.

laying sleepers

Heavy duty machinery lifting two sleepers at a time and placing them in position.

dust!

Further along the new track was being ballasted and everytime a skip load of ballast was unloaded a great cloud of dust enveloped anyone walking along the station footpath.

a buffer stop

A brand new buffer stop has been delivered and was sitting on top of a pile of sleepers in the carpark. Apparantly this is going on the end of a safety overun being built on the down lines.

nuclear train

As I was preparing to leave, the DRS nuclear flask train passed through headed by 37607 and 20313.

heading away

Once through the station the driver let rip... ahhh... a beautiful noise..

15th June

66211

66211 waits at the south of the station after hauling a crane on-site.

the crane

The crane.

looking south

Looking south and the Up line is in the process of being completely renewed while the platform has been completely stripped of furniture and is being prepared for it's top layer.

north

Looking north and 66064 heads a train being loaded with spoil.

18th June

the platfrom

Work continues on the new platform.

new junction

The new junction has been lifted into place and ballasted.

men at work

The platform is being prepared for the opening while a pile of new lights wait for installation.

ballast arrives

66042 arrives with a ballast train. Unfortunately for me, the driver parked the train under that bridge and walked the rest of the way! I had to leave before he moved again.

25th June. Three days to go before the re-opening!

the platform

The platform is being tarmaced and new waiting shelters have been erected.

the end

Everywhere I looked was a frenzy of activity.

new signs

New signs have arrived.

junction

The junction is being checked and re-checked and the signalling tested. In the background a stoneblower is at work, while it's just possible to see the positioning of the new buffer stop.

the buffer stop!

The buffer stop!

people

Lots of people were stood around holding pens and bits of paper while watching other people working their tits off!

June 29th 2004. Station now re-opened.

towards bristol

The view towards Bristol showing the completed Platform 3.

looking north

The view north and a much tidier junction compared to my last visit!

143618

143618 calls at the new Platform 3 with a service for Cardiff.

along the platform

The view along the widened platform.

158865

158865 sets off from Platform 2.

end!

The End! (phew!)
