Fishponds
To Bristol: Lodge Causeway
To Bath or the North: New Station Road
History
Opened as Stapleton on the 1st April 1866, becoming Fish Ponds (two words) on 1st July 1867. Renamed Fishponds (one word) on 1st May 1939. Closed to goods on 13th December 1965 and passengers on 7th March 1966.
Fishponds signal box was built in 1896 and fitted with a new frame in 1905. It closed on 12th May 1968.
The goods shed survived until about 1991 when the whole area around the station was cleared to make room for a Safeway supermarket.

An intriguing and undated photo of Fishponds station that Simon Whittingham found in a jumble sale. Clerestory coaches stand at the down platform with more coaches stored in the down platform bay. There would seem to be three engines in steam in the goods yard. Most of the passengers are women or children and all seem to be wearing their Sunday best. The people on the train seem to be peering out of the doors rather expectantly, as if waiting for those on the platform to make their move. © Avon Valley Railway

The site of Fishponds station on 28.11.2005. This is the view towards Bristol. I'm stood at what would have been (pre-demolition) the end of the platforms.
-
The same spot looking north. Station Road is hidden behind the bushes, and there's a very busy Morrisons supermarket to the left. Fishponds Road, even further to the left was gridlocked. A perfect spot for a railway station then...
-
At the south of the station the line was crossed by a footbridge between Justice Road and Hockey's Road. This has been removed and a path built to join the Bristol-Bath cyclepath.

Looking north at the site of Fishponds station with the abutment of the footbridge on the right.

The abutment has been reused as an access point for a new building.
