History

Capels Viaduct is 253 yards long. It originally carried the railway over a valley, canal, river, millpond and mill with skew arches for the canal, river and mill stream. The canal was filled in during the construction of the A419 Stroud Bypass (Dr. Newton's Way) and that road now passes through the arch originally used by the canal.

2012

  Work in progress to restore the Thames and Severn canal to a navigable waterway. This involves taking the canal on a new route and under a different arch of the railway viaduct.

2013

  Almost a year later and work has rapidly progressed, although much of what has changed is on the far side of the viaduct. The canal has been restored under Dr Newtons Way bridge though.

  Four months since the previous photo and the canal once again passes under the railway viaduct and one of the missing links in the canal has been restored.
