History

This 317 yard long viaduct comprises 27 arches, each of 28ft span. It falls at a gradient of 1 in 55 from each end to the mid-point.

The original structure was built for a single track but between 1888 and 1894 was widened by about 15ft on the inside of its curve to allow for a second track. In 1946 two of the viaduct's arches collapsed and had to be rebuilt with double line working recommencing on 1st of August 1946.
